SMUD EV charger rebates for businesses (2026)
SMUD is one of the few California utilities with a steady, open per-charger incentive for businesses. Its business EV page lists amounts per charger handle, and every amount doubles at equity sites (CalEnviroScreen 4.0 percentile of 75 or greater). SMUD's page does not state a closing date; its application portal is live.
SMUD per-handle amounts (checked today)
| Charger | Standard site | Equity site |
|---|---|---|
| Low power Level 2 or smart outlet (under 6.6 kW) | $2,500 | $5,000 |
| High power Level 2 (6.6 kW and up) | $3,500 | $7,000 |
| Non-public DCFC under 50 kW | $7,500 | $15,000 |
| Non-public DCFC 50 to 149.9 kW | $15,000 | $30,000 |
| Non-public DCFC 150 kW and up | $30,000 | $60,000 |
Make-ready adders on the same page: $250 per stub out ($500 equity), $1,000 per panel upgrade ($2,000 equity), $5,000 per transformer upgrade ($10,000 equity), and $100 per kWh of integrated battery capacity for DC fast chargers with onboard storage.
How to apply
- Confirm the site is a SMUD business account and check its CalEnviroScreen 4.0 percentile to see which column applies.
- Apply through SMUD's incentive portal (linked as "Apply for incentives" on SMUD's business EV page), or email CommercialEV@smud.org with questions.
- Keep invoices and charger specs; the amount depends on charger power and handle count.
What stacks in Sacramento County
Sacramento Metro AQMD runs an infrastructure cost-share grant (60% of eligible costs for any project, more with onsite solar or wind, plus 10% for publicly accessible sites, and 100% for public school bus charging and sensitive receptors). Its page shows the program as closed, so watch for the next solicitation. Communities in Charge Wave 5 covers Level 2 at multifamily sites when it opens. The separate Sacramento County CALeVIP project is closed.

Getting it built in SMUD territory
SMUD pays per charger handle, so the owner or the installer applies through SMUD's portal with the charger specs. If your installer files for you, confirm in writing who the check is made out to.
Who files the rebate applications is usually the site owner, or the installer or charging provider on the owner's behalf. Some providers offer turnkey projects (design, permits, install and paperwork for one price) or revenue-share and charging-as-a-service deals where they fund part of the equipment and share charging revenue. Both can work; compare the contract length, who keeps the rebates and LCFS credits, and what happens at the end of the term. More detail on the Sacramento and the Central Valley page.
Where EVgpo fits: EVgpo sources chargers at group pricing and sells nationwide. You can ask us for a charger quote and compare it with your installer's.
