National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program
Federal corridor DCFC funding through CalTrans. California is on NEVI 4 / NEVI 5 regional solicitations. Public-access required.
How it pays
Reimbursement-style grant via state-led solicitations. CA NEVI awards historically cover up to ~80% of project cost for DCFC corridor sites with 4+ 150kW+ ports. Awards range from a few hundred thousand to several million per site.
Who qualifies
Stations must be ≤1 mile from corridor exit, 50 miles apart along corridors, 4+ DCFC ports at 150kW+ each, available 24/7 to public, NEVI-compliant uptime/payment/data reporting. Funding restored in 2025 after court reversed funding freeze.
Eligible properties
Geography
Statewide CA, but along FHWA-designated Alternative Fuel Corridors initially; expanded site eligibility under updated 2025 interim guidance.
Timing
California is on NEVI 4 (GFO-25-604) and NEVI 5 (GFO-25-606) regional solicitations. CA expected to continue rolling solicitations through FY26 ($885M nationally apportioned for FY26).
How to apply
How this stacks with other programs
Federal programs typically stack with utility, regional (air district), state, and city/county programs on the same project. The general California stacking rules:
- Federal §30C tax credit: stacks with state, utility, regional, and local cash rebates without offset. Stacks with federal grants only with basis offset (federal grant amount reduces §30C basis).
- Federal grants (CFI, REAP, NEVI): not stackable with other federal grants on the same port.
- State + utility + regional + local: generally full stack across tiers. Same-tier programs serving the same port don't double-fund.
For the full stacking matrix, see the homepage stacking section.
